10 Genius Summer Must-Haves That Dog Owners Swear By

You can fit your dog with a cooling vest to keep her comfortable while playing under the sun. Cooling vests do not require any type of power, and they are super easy to use: Simply dunk the vest under cool or cold water, wring it out and put it on your dog.

Unlike humans, dogs are unable to sweat. They rely on their respiratory tract to dissipate heat. Dogs with a more nasal surface area like German Shepherds and Labradors are more efficient at dispelling heat. In contrast, “smush-faced” breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs have shorter nasal passages and are more prone to overheating.

“We went on our afternoon walk, and in around a mile into the run, she started stopping and sitting, as if she was struggling to keep up and seemed very weak.’ I thought she was just out of shape.” Lara Jones said.

“As soon as I reached home, Kobe was completely immobile and panting non-stop. She wasn’t able to get up and refused the water bowl right next to her. In a few minutes, she started throwing up blood and was bleeding internally. I had no idea what was happening until it was too late. I don’t think people realize how easy it is for a dog to overheat like that.” Lara added.

How do you know your dog is overheated?

Normal dog body temperature is between 100.2° and 102.8° Fahrenheit. When his internal cooling mechanisms are overwhelmed, a dog may no longer be able to cool himself adequately. If it continues rising past 104°, he’s in serious danger. Further a rising in temperature above 106° means more risk for heatstroke to occur.

Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition that can cause the heart, brain, liver, and kidneys to shut down. Fortunately, heatstroke can be prevented.

Of course, there are plenty of ingenious cooling pet products out there for but we’ve picket the best!
