CBD Oil For Dogs. What Are The Benefits?

CBD or cannabidiol is a cannabinoid molecule found in hemp and has soothing effects rather than psychoactive like the THC also found in the plant.

CBD oil for animals works the same way as it does in humans; it binds to receptors in their endocannabinoid system to activate them to regulate and balance the body. CBD mostly binds to the CB1 and CB2 receptors which are scattered throughout the body (in the brain, nervous system, organs, glands of the digestive tract, skin and tissue). If your dog is experiencing stress, pain or anxiety, CBD oil can be very calming and soothing for him.

What are the benefits of CBD oil for dogs

Even if your dog is not suffering from any physical or mental illness, CBD oil can still be very beneficial. Some of the effects are:

  • calms and relaxes
  • promotes healthier digestion
  • strengthens the immune system
  • reduces anxiety and stress
  • helps relieve chronic pain
  • improves neurological functions
  • makes the dog more mobile and improves his activity level

In case your dog was suffering from disorders or illnesses, CBD oil can be used for:

  • anxiety (for example, when the dog is having problems staying alone)
  • infections
  • pain
  • healing
  • fat nodules
  • age-related symptoms
  • indigestion, vomiting
  • epileptic seizures
  • mental disorders
  • Cancer

How can you give CBD oil to your dog?

CBD capsules and oils can be administered directly by mouth or added to food. The animal must be calm to put the product in his mouth, ideally on the bottom gums, inside the cheeks or in the middle of the tongue using an oil pipette. You can also dilute the drops in water or mix the product with his food or in a treat is often much easier.

When to use CBD treats?

As mentioned above, the most effective way to supplement your dog with CBD is placing it under his tongue; but this can be really challenging with some dogs. In this case, you can opt for CBD treats that are as good as any other CBD supplement.

Dosage of CBD oil for dogs

If you want to use CBD oil as a dietary supplement for your dog, then a 1% concentration is sufficient. However, in the case of disease, you will need to increase the number of drops administered.

For serious illnesses, although it is recommended to start with a concentration of 2 to 5% and then increasing the concentration gradually until the desired effect is achieved, but consulting the veterinarian is a must.

Although CBD oil has many positive impacts on your dog, it is not a miracle cure. A nutritious and a well-balanced diet is key for your dog’s health and then comes the CBD oil to back up his system and improve his body functions.

Are there any side effects of CBD oil?

There aren’t any known severe side effects, and it does not seem to counteract drugs or other nutritional supplements. However, in case of an overdose, the following side effects may occur:

  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue/Energy drop
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
